Evaluation of Co-Composting as an Alternative for the Use of Agricultural Waste of Spring Onions, Chicken Manure and Bio-Waste Produced in Moorland Ecosystems

Composting is an adequate method for treating and valorizing agricultural waste such as those from spring onion (SO) cultivation chicken breeding (chicken manure–CM). However, the low content of Total Organic Carbon in SO high concentration total nitrogen CM are limitations composting process. This research studied co-composting a moorland ecosystem, together with locally available co-substrates biowaste (BW) woodchips (WC), focusing on effect process development end-product quality. A pilot-scale experiment was carried out using three treatments triplicated piles: (i) Treatment A: 43% + 41% BW 16% WC; (ii) B: 52% 32% WC, (iii) C: 70% 30% WC. Treatments B reached thermophilic temperatures after two days start remained at that level 17 days. treatment environmental temperature during curing shorter time (43 days) than (53 days). C did not achieve temperatures. Tests end showed stability non-phytotoxic characteristics (germination indexes 80%). The fertility index products presented values 4.3 (over 5.0) while obtained value 2.5. From perspective use, had due to deficiencies essential nutrients like phosphorus. Still, they potential soil amendment restoration processes. In summary, we have demonstrated this waste, combination other organic materials, could be good product.
